Traction #001: How to Get Free Marketing from Google

March 21, 2023

Hi Friend,

Welcome to the first edition of Traction, a new free resource to help business owners like you get the most from your marketing!

Each Traction includes two sections: What to Know and What to Do. In just five minutes, you’ll learn a new best practice and get actionable guidance on how to leverage it for your business.

New editions come up every two weeks. Happy reading!

Today we’re kicking off a four-part series about Google Business (formerly known as Google My Business).

Whether you’re just getting started with Google Business or you were an early adopter, you’ll find something in this series to help you leverage this free tool to help your business grow.

What to Know

Google Business is worth the effort.

Most marketing is expensive, time-consuming, and risky. Google Business is none of those things.

Google Business is free and easy to use, and it can help your business get found by new people. In fact, it’s as close to a sure thing as we get in marketing. And if you’re not using it, you’re most certainly leaving money on the table.

What to Do

Claim or create your Google Business listing.

If you already have a Google Business profile, congratulations: You have no homework this week! Watch for future Traction editions to find out if your profile is set up in the best way.

If you don’t have a Google Business profile:

  1. Go to google.com/business to sign up.
  2. Choose your business category.
  3. Tell Google your service area. (Even if your business doesn’t have a physical address, you can still have a Google Business profile as long as you have in-person contact with customers.)
  4. Enter your exact website URL into your profile.
  5. Complete your business description.
  6. Follow Google’s instructions to verify your listing.
